June 2, 2005      IDENTITY THEFT PRESENTATION

Steven A. Moore President / CEO

MSA President & CEO Steven Moore spoke before a packed, standing room only audience of Pennsylvania Energy Association members on June 2nd, 2005 at the Hershey Lodge & convention center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, during their association’s annual conference.  The timely subject of the presentation was “Identity Theft Prevention.”  Mr. Moore’s presentation included many points designed to improve a business data security and better protect customer data.  Mr. Moore surprised many in the audience and generated questions at the end of his presentation when he was able to demonstrate how several low technology, zero or low cost measures, if taken by a business, could greatly reduce its exposure and the risk of a successful identity theft attack upon their customer data base.
Mr. Moore noted that it was only a matter of time before groups of  lawyers, working on behalf of identity theft victims, successfully sued business for negligence and damages caused by a business’ lackadaisical view of their customer’s data security.
During the tobacco suits of the nineties, lawyers needed to wait 2-5 decades in order to find suitable  victims willing to litigate individually or as part of a class action.  The identity theft crisis that America is now facing is generating millions of victims per week.  Mr. Moore demonstrated that government legislation alone would not save business.  Business needs to save themselves, by protecting their customers.  Mr. Moore closed his presentation by stating that business cannot afford to wait or cover its eyes and hope that this problem will go away.   He then asked rhetorically. “Can your business really afford the public relations nightmare associated with an identity theft scandal and the potential onslaught of civil litigation?”
